 Creating Our Future

Reflecting back on 2016 so many exciting, notable and moving memories come to mind. As I look forward to another fulfilling year I ask  the question—what do I wish to create in 2017? The long awaited Crossing Bhutan was premiered at Santa Barbara International Film Festival to a standing ovation for Ben Henretig, as well as several others festivals last year and I am now thrilled to share it with those in my hometown on January 27th—join us! My newest book, Dirty Inspirations, came out with a poignant and exciting book signing at my favorite, Book Shop Santa Cruz. I then took the book on my 8th trip to Bhutan, while once again supporting the Bhutan Olympic Committee in producing the 3rd Annual Bhutan International […]

Mom

Heartfelt thanks to all who were able to come to mom’s life celebration. From life-time friends, to neighbors, to even casual acquaintances and inclusive of great food, all at the church and home she loved so much; it was a perfect celebration of my mother, and even moreso because you were a part of it. She was well loved. Mom would have been quite pleased. For those who couldn’t make it, I thought I’d share my eulogy as, even in a partial manner, it exemplifies my unusual bond with my mom: I am one of those fortunate people who had an honest, raw and authentic relationship with my mother. As I say that, it may conjure up images of admiration […]

Project What Matters

What Matters? While crossing Bhutan, trekking and mountain biking in 2011, we started looking at this basic concept with the Bhutanese. Since then I’ve explored further with blog interviews, as well as within much of the writing I did for my new book, Dirty Inspirations: Lessons From the Trenches of Extreme Endurance Sports. The past several months I’ve picked up the thread again while doing a bit of traipsing around, and will fully explore while on an upcoming cycling trip across Spain on the Camino de Santiago trail. Its simple. I engage with another, either a stranger or someone familiar, and at some point in conversation I inquire, “Can I take your photo and then ask you a question?” I […]

Connection

What a gift when someone you don’t know easily connects with something you’ve deeply shared. I found the below review on amazon about my book, Dirty Inspirations, and am so grateful for this kindred seeker—someone who deeply ‘got’ the premise(s) for my writing this book. Since mom’s death I’ve been kinda numb, sad and quasi-checked out and this connection instantly drew me back in to life’s loveliness. Thank you, thank you, to my intrepid reviewer. May your trails be windy, crooked and full of questions. “There aren’t enough superlatives to describe the insights Terri Schneider shares into the minds of endurance athletes in Dirty Inspirations. Schneider begins in her days as a IronMan triathlete covering a swim, bike and race course […]

My New Favorite Thing to do in Bhutan

My new favorite thing to do in Bhutan is to buy lunch for whomever sits at my table in a local restaurant. If a table is for several people and I am alone, it is common for locals to just come up and use the rest of the table. There would be a lot of polite asking and apologizing going on in this situation in the U.S. In Bhutan, what’s mine is their’s (with a lot of exceptions for ‘outsiders’). But if I’m in a local place, I’m treated more like a local (which is my preference). So whomever sits at my table gets a free lunch. I don’t tell them this, we don’t even interact while eating. I just […]

Drum as Teacher

Today I purchased a very large drum, just like the ones that are used regularly by monks in Bhutan. It then took several hours to sort out how I was going to pack and ship the drum, handle and base, to the U.S. I went into this process with my ‘American mind,’ working hard to summons the quickest and most effective means to sort all of this out, all the while expecting impeccable customer service along the way. But it is uncommon for Bhutan to succumb to my incessant attachment to American ways. So the entire process became a lesson in patience, compassion and gratitude, and involved multiple humans and a lot of laugher. The ultimate celebration of our success […]
