My New Favorite Thing to do in Bhutan

My new favorite thing to do in Bhutan is to buy lunch for whomever sits at my table in a local restaurant. If a table is for several people and I am alone, it is common for locals to just come up and use the rest of the table. There would be a lot of polite asking and apologizing going on in this situation in the U.S. In Bhutan, what’s mine is their’s (with a lot of exceptions for ‘outsiders’). But if I’m in a local place, I’m treated more like a local (which is my preference). So whomever sits at my table gets a free lunch. I don’t tell them this, we don’t even interact while eating. I just go and pay my bill and pay for theirs as well. This is so much fun that I wish I could do it while back home. But alas—lunch here, for both me and the older gentleman who sat at my table today came to… $3….(and I was stuffed).
