Big Agnes Copper Spur 2 Platinum Tent

With all the chat that many ultralight 2-person tents these days are not quite roomy enough for 2 people, I was pleasantly surprised with the shoulder, foot and head room in this tent. Since I have never purchased an ultralight 2-person tent (I tend to fly solo), the weight of this beauty was breathtaking—a mere 2 lb 5 oz—partly because of that, the price was also breathtaking ($600). Its tough to imagine that tent material this light weight will keep out the elements but the rain and snow pummeling we got on its first night out, left us cozy and dry inside. The only infrequent drip we got was because the weight of the snow and water accumulation on the […]

Runners Workout Handbook

Observing the runners this past weekend at the Bhutan International Marathon and Half Marathon I was reminded, yet again, that some runners arrive at start lines ready to execute effectively and well, some don’t. I love creating new tools to help the latter, so that their next experience can be optimal! Here is info on one of my latest: Whether you run competitively, to get fit or to stay fit, The Runner’s Workout Handbook is your complete guide to finding innovative and engaging running plans to make the most of your training time, providing a wide variety of workouts to keep you challenged and motivated, all while improving your performance. Expert and multi-sport coach Terri Schneider combines skill training with variations […]

The Good News About Getting Out of Shape

A month in Bhutan with no bike, a running injury and a lot of excuses, left me back in CA in the worst shape that I can remember. Even if I am not training for an event or big (or small) adventure, I always train—for life. I enjoy swimming, biking, running, hiking, strength training and yoga while mixing in a couple other activities as desired. My body likes to cross train and even after all these years, I thrive on my activity time each day. So though I’m approaching 55, I haven’t known what it feels like to be in my 50’s and be totally out of shape. Now I know that it really really sucks. What I have known […]

Paper Fetish – Save a Tree or Three this Holiday!

NOTE: I posted this many years ago and it may become a tradition that I ‘recycle’ it (pun intended) each holiday. Join me this year in my paper fetish – boycott wrapping paper! We’re on it! I have this thing about paper. Full pieces, scraps, and various textures—any part of paper that has a blank space on it draws my attention. It started the day after college. I announced to my parents, who had come into town for graduation ceremonies, that I would be leaving the next day to ride my bike 200 miles up the California coast and that they were assigned the task of carting all my crap home. After successfully negotiating the virtues of the solo ride […]

Give Yourself the Gift of Writing – Part 1

I have not written here for a while because I have been spending my writing time on, my next book. I’ve also been interacting and sharing with other writers and poets, reading other writers and discussing all aspects of writing with a dear friend who is throwing much of his time into writing his personal story. Sort of like athletes who share with others information on the joys, challenges and struggles of their training process, writers too find value in that genre of mutual support. Many of you are writers or wanna-be writers (I think its kinda the same thing) so to bring you into the circle and support you in flourishing in your new or existing writing project, I […]

Learning How You Learn

NOTE: I get that this is an oddly fringe post for me to share. But I’ve been pondering all this and if there is one person out there who might benefit from it, its will be worth while to share it. So, READ ON! A couple weeks ago I was sitting with a friend reviewing for a quiz just outside the lecture hall of the photography class I’m currently taking. We both knew the material well and were spouting off names and dates and significances of certain images, when a young girl in our class chimed in, “How do you remember all that stuff!” In that instant I remembered that when I was her age, I was just learning how […]
