Dirty Inspirations: Sneak Peek!

Dirty Inspirations: Lessons From the Trenches of Extreme Endurance Sports will be released on January 26. Pre-order your book at a discounted price then email me and I’ll send you a thank you postcard! Dirty Inspirations has been my blog for many years. Despite its intrigue as a potentially pornographic blog, it instead speaks to those of us who like to get down and dirty—literally. Many of the adventures that have existed here (and a bunch that existed prior) have been expanded, contemplated for their inspirational and intellectual value, and made into a book. If you have any curiosity as to how and why humans push limits and what we derive from these endeavors, this is the book for you. […]

Learning How You Learn

NOTE: I get that this is an oddly fringe post for me to share. But I’ve been pondering all this and if there is one person out there who might benefit from it, its will be worth while to share it. So, READ ON! A couple weeks ago I was sitting with a friend reviewing for a quiz just outside the lecture hall of the photography class I’m currently taking. We both knew the material well and were spouting off names and dates and significances of certain images, when a young girl in our class chimed in, “How do you remember all that stuff!” In that instant I remembered that when I was her age, I was just learning how […]

What is There to Love About Swimming in the Cold, Murky Ocean?

When the tail end of a wave flattens out, slides up the sand and swiftly paints my feet and ankles, I like to guess the temperature of the water. Even if it happens to be in the high 50’s, which for Santa Cruz is what we gleefully call ‘warm’, the startling chill will strike for the second time when I get waist deep. Salt water oozes into the zipper on the backside of my wetsuit like a subcutaneous injection of ice cream. If my ankles ache as I linger to adjust my goggles I know I’ll get jaw freeze when my face hits the murky water and that about half way through the swim, fingers will flop uselessly with the […]

Considering Pain, For Big Satisfaction in Endurance Sport

pain |pān| noun: physical suffering or discomfort, mental suffering or distress In general, pain has a distinct reputation for being the unpleasant bad guy or even the herd of elephants in the room. Both whom most humans instinctively avoid at all turns. Unless you’re an endurance athlete. In a world increasingly designed to promote comfort, endurance athletes willfully choose to participate in (and pay large sums of money for) endeavors that will invoke pain and discomfort for sometimes very long periods of time. With some upcoming writing on this topic and extended ‘personal projects’ looming, I have gleefully repondered this theme while spending lots of hours on the trails. What we find out quickly as endurance athletes is that pain […]

How I Came to Taking Pictures: The Unwanted Gift that Keeps on Giving

Several years ago when I tore my achilles tendon I was offered the most unwanted gift for a life-time athlete; the requirement to change up the speed with which I moved around on the planet. Upon initial acquisition of an athletic injury most of us are of course, blinded to seeing this gift because we are ensconced in denial, grief, anger or the self pity that our usual life speed may have to change up at all. But when we finally succumb to the excruciatingly patient task of tending to the healing of our body (so that we can get back up to speed), it is possible to catch a glimpse of the opportunity available to us during this undesired […]

The Big Scary Test

REMINDER!: This year I am blogging on Athleta.com website and will be sharing the same blogs I offer Athleta to this blog site. Enjoy! – Terri In my last post, Part 2, we were left working with word imagery while prepping to head to Kona for the big scary test at the Ironman World Championship. Check list en route to Kona: Word cues and affirmations solidly in place? Check. Fit as I can be given minimal land running? Check. Stifling heat and unrelenting winds on the Kona Coast? Check. Huge unknown hanging over my head as to how this race will play out!? Check! Even though I was completely unsure how my injured leg would play out on race day, as […]
